Harmony Elementary School — Bell County, Kentucky

HarmonyMap

Harmony (or sometimes referred to as Harmony Heights) Elementary School was located in the central part of Bell County off of state route 190 about 5 miles from Pineville.

I havent been able to pinpoint an exact closing or opening date for this building but I would estimate the opening sometime in the mid 1950s and the closing date sometime in the 1990s.   Bell County went through a couple of rounds of school consolidations in the mid to late 90s that lead to the closing of several elementary schools and I think this was one that was effected.

After the school was closed the building was eventually sold to Clear Creek Bible College which is located on property adjacent to this property.

Clear Creek has had plans for several years to remodel the building and use it as administrative offices.

Harmony Elementary’s mascot was the hornet.  As you can tell the college keeps the grass cut and the grounds are well kept at the old school.

The inside of this building has pretty much been gutted of anything of value or that is of fire starting value.

Including the drop ceiling tiles.

Harmony5

It looks as though the building has been cleared of debris.

Harmony6

The building is not secure though, as the back door was standing wide open.

Harmony7

This classroom is located on the back side of the building.

Harmony8

This is the long, main corridor hallway of the building.

Harmony9 This was the kitchen area.

and here is the lunchroom.

Harmony11

Another classroom.  This one has even had the blackboard removed.  This classroom was on the front side of the school.

Harmony12

As you can tell, the back side of the school isnt as well kept as the front side.

**Updated Information**  I have discovered that Harmony closed at the end of the 1999-2000 school year.  That year the school ended with 85 students enrolled.

  1. I absolutely loved looking at these pics and stumbled upon them by chance. Just wanted you to know that Harmony underwent demolition beginning on November 16th of this year (2016) and lasted several days. 😟 It was hard for our community!

  2. I loved Harmony! I was a Hornet from Kindergarten through 7th grade, then on to the new middle school, Bell County Middle School (7th and 8th grade)- The Bulldogs: which is now Bell Central (K-8). It opened up for my 8th grade year (’89-’90)…which was a bummer ’cause our class didn’t get our 8th grade graduation. My last class year at Harmony was ’87-’88 & the 7th grade teacher was the best, Mrs. Donna McGeorge. We were terrified of her at first ,but as fate would have it; turned out she was the best teacher I ever had…very intelligent lady. She made sure you understood a lesson (I mean she actually taught us). It was just the best school ever, thanks to-Mrs. Collett :), Clint Powers, Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Helton, Mrs. Walters, Mr. and Mrs. Goodin (Principal and wife- 2nd grade teacher) and our great librarian, Mrs. Howard. Our library was my favorite place…beautiful tables, awesome book collection, daily newspapers, and Mrs. Howard was fantastic 🙂 She kept it pristine and beautiful, she took pride in her work and her students. (Never forget watching- Tombs and Talismans)
Thank you for sharing this article, but the pictures are so sad! The school is completely gone now, but us Hornets will have wonderful memories forever 🙂

  3. I attended Harmony from 1969-1977, it was like a second home to me, as all of my brothers and sisters attended their also. There were ten of us kids, from eighth grade to kindergarten, at most given times one in each grade. It saddens me deeply to know that the school has been torn down, so many of my childhood memories had centered around the school. Larry Simpson

    1. I went to Harmony for 2 years during the 1973 – 1975 school years. I had Mrs. Goodin for 2nd grade but can’t remember my 3rd grade teacher. Do you happen to know her name?
