All That Remains: Salem Mall, Trotwood, Ohio

Former Sears -- Salem Mall, Trotowood, Ohio

Salem Mall was the first enclosed shopping mall in the Dayton Ohio area, opening in 1966.  The mall originally was home to 60 stores and was anchored by Rike’s and Sears. In the early 1980s the mall was reworked and now had a capacity for over 100 stores.  By the mid 90s the mall was considered a dead mall A death knell came to the mall in 1998 when both Lazarus and JC Penney pulled out of the mall.
Former Sears -- Salem Mall, Trotowood, Ohio With changing demographis and a general eastward flight of new development in the Dayton area, Salem Mall eventually, battered and beaten closed its doors and on May 6, 2006 demolition on the mall began. Only the Sears building would remain standing. Former Sears -- Salem Mall, Trotowood, Ohio
In October 2013 it was announced that Sears would close its Trotwood location. That building has been standing vacant since.

May 2017 Indiana/Ohio Road Trip: Day 2

These crazy road trips where I bounce back and forth between a couple of states and drive several hundred miles a day hurt a little more than they use to. Today wasnt hardly as many miles as yesterday: 320. I started out the day in Logansport, Indiana. First on my agenda was to check out the mall right across the street from my hotel. The only stores in this mall are Dunham’s Sports and JC Penney. The JC Penney is closing next month. I was impressed with the mall management keeping the fountain going and even putting fake wooden ducks in it haha.

There has been a lot of talk that this mall will close soon and be demolished for the land to be redeveloped.
The next stop was Peru, Indiana where I went to the tiniest Kmart ever. Ill post pictures of that later.

After Peru, I drove down to Marion to explore the Five Points Mall. Much to my surprise there was a carnival set up in the parking lot and that was really cool.

This mall is anchored by Carsons and Roses. It was originally anchored by Carsons, Hills, JC Penney and Sears. The JC Penney and Sears are empty, the Hills is now Roses.

A couple of Goodwills later and lunch at some place called the root beer stand and I was on my way to the second Kmart of the day; Gas City, Indiana. This store is a perfect mirrored image layout of the store that was at Village Center Mall in Harlan. Auto Center and all.

After this it gets fuzzy. I started getting tired and just put the address of an abandoned Sears in Trotwood, Ohio in the GPS. I do remember going through Muncie and Richmond.

ALl that remains of the old Salem Mall in Trotwood just north of Dayton.
I explored a few more things and was in the hotel room by 6. An early evening should recharge my batteries. A lot is on tap for tomorrow, I’ll need it.

Kmart Store Closings Google Maps Mashup

Kmart Collage
I have spent the evening working on geo-tagging my flickr photos and creating a google map of the Kmart stores that I have visited that have closed since 2016. The grand total is 31. As this Kmart and Sears thing plays out I will continually add to this map and documment the future of Kmart. The map can be seen by clicking  HERE

Everyone have a great week ahead and thanks again for reading.

One Last Visit: Sears In Their Final Days at Fort Henry Mall

Sears -- Fort Henry Mall -- Kingsport, TN
Can we all just agree right off the bat that I am just a big weirdo? A big, sentimental, nostalgia obsessed, incredibly handsome weirdo? As more and more Kmart and Sears closings have been announced over the past 12 months I have raced over the Midwest and Southeast trying to document these stores and give them a footnote in a very small chapter of a minute subject of our human existence. None of the stores, save for the Kmart in Corbin is or was more dear to my heart than the Sears at Fort Henry Mall.

Just after it was announced that this store would be closing i went over and visited and wrote up a blog entry covering the history of the store. That entry, along with photos from the visit can be found by clicking  on this link.

Sears -- Fort Henry Mall -- Kingsport TN The Sears at Fort Henry Mall will close for good at the end of the business day on Sunday March 26th. Sears -- Kingsport TN

At the time of this visit, with only three days left in business the attached auto center had already been closed for business and the signs removed.

The Package Pick Up area was busy with people picking up fixtures that they have bought from the store.
Sears -- Fort Henry Mall -- Kingsport, TN If I was a betting man I would bet that this spot could very well become home to the tri cities area’s first Dunham’s Sports store. (although if I had my way it would become home to the areas first At Home store). Sears -- Fort Henry Mall -- Kingsport, TN
Hull, the company that recently purchased Fort Henry Mall appears ready and willing to do what it takes to reinvigorate the mall and have stated changes are coming to the mall as early as this summer. The company (Hull) also seems to have a knack for filling vacated mall anchor stores with Dunham’s or TJ Maxx.

Spring Time Ramblings Through The Heartland(A few weeks early)

Over the past few days I have been rambling about the Bluegrass state and the southern edge of Illinois and a small corner of Missouri. Why you might ask? Well, like I stated in this blog earlier this week I just had to go back to Cairo one more time before the town declinds even further and also, as you might have figured out I have this weird obsession with docummenting and experiencing Sears / Kmart as much as possible, especially since their future doesnt look particularly bright. What does Sears and Kmart have to do with this area of the country?
Spring Warm Up Road Trip 2017 Well in January, Sears Holdings announced they would close 7(SEVEN?!?!?!) more Kmart stores across the Bluegrass State. All of the ones that were closing that I hadnt been to were from Bowling Green West. Couple this with the fact that the stores close for good on or about March 19th (my spring break isnt until mid-late April) and the fact that once I got to Paducah I would only be 30 minutes from Cairo I just had to do what it took to make it happen. Spring Warm Up Road Trip 2017
It snowballed into a trip covering 4 states  and by the time I realized I would only be less than an hour from one of the very last Sears stores built from the ground up ( built in 2006 ) AND it is also one of the very last Sears Grand stores still signed as such…..I covered a little over 900 miles, 7 new to me Kmart stores (side note: I have now been to every Kmart store currently opene in the bluegrass state! , 2 Sears stores, (1 closing and 1 Sears Grand) Multiple abandoned schools, throw in an abandoned hospital and the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers and I have had a very busy, but fulfilling time. I will be covering all of these discoveries and explorations in the blog over the next month or so. I look forward to sharing my disooveries with you!

Sears — Fort Henry Mall — Kingsport, Tennessee

Before starting this article, I realize that this mall “officially” changed it’s name to Kingsport Town Center almost 10 years ago.  However, seeing as how the mall has failed to follow through with even changing the name on the building, I refuse to call this mall by such a generic name.

The mall was officially opened in November, 1976.  Sears opened with the mall and has been there ever since.  More information about the mall and it’s history can be found by clicking the link to an article on Sky City by clicking HERE.  On January 4, 2017 it was announced that the Sears at Fort Henry Mall along with about 150 more Sears and Kmart stores would close in March. The local article announcing the closure can be found by clicking HERE
