Martin is about seven miles south of Prestonsburg on Beaver Creek at the mouth of Bucks Branch. It was an early twentieth century coal mining town originally known as Bucks Branch, but the name Martin was in use by about 1915, for Martin Van Allen, the local postmaster. The Bucks Branch post office opened in 1910, was renamed Smalley in 1913 for Smalley Crisp, a landowner in the area, and finally named Martin in 1926. Martin was incorporated in 1920.
A couple of weeks ago I finally went up to Floyd County to see the old Drift Theater for myself. On the way I saw some other pretty neat stuff. Some of these pictures are of places or buildings that will be featured in their own entry later on in this blog, some are just random shots. Floyd County is a very interesting county with a lot of history, a lot of coal mining history to be specific. I hope to explore more there in the near future. In the meantime enjoy & goodnight.
Wheelright High School was located in southern Floyd County near the junction of state route 122 and 306.
The high school building no longer exists as it was demolished sometime in the mid to late 90s. Wheelright high school was very similar in construction to the high school at Wayland that I covered in this blog in a previous entry. A picture of the Wheelright High School building can be found by clicking HERE. All that remains standing is this beautiful art deco inspired gymnasium.
Wheelright High School’s mascot was the Trojans and the school colors were maroon and white.
The high school was closed at the end of the 1993 school year when South Floyd High School at neighboring Hi-Hat opened its doors to students that following fall.
This is the former Melvin Grade School located in Melvin, Kentucky.
The school is located along state highway 466 in southern Floyd County. The school was originally constructed in 1949 and replaced a one room school at nearby Abner and a three room school at nearby Weeksburry.
The Melvin Grade School served the community for nearly 40 years. A neat picture of 8th grade class from 1985 can be found by clicking HERE
The school closed at the end of the 1997-98 school year. The grounds currently serve as the grounds for a junk yard.
